The Dialogue
Not everyone has the opportunity to converse with one of the world's greatest minds, Plato. Born as Aristocles, Plato, or Aristocles, changed his name to Plato, not unlike many great screen actors who changed their name because they sound sissy; like Charles Bronson (Charles Buchinsky). But in that fateful evening of December the 4th, 2005, we met each other, Plato and I, not Charles Bronson, in a cafe, and conversed about the meaning of life, death, and ultimately, TV. Surprisingly, Plato was up-to-date with current TV series, owing to his obsession with Greek theatres in his youth days; the Greek women of his age, he claimed, was more voluptuous than the actresses these days, which is a let down. But it didnt deter him from watching TV, which is a fresh change from smelly, sweaty theatres in Greek town of Athens, he explained. Here on, is a record of our dialogues...
KD: Plato my dear friend, are you still following those TV series? Most of them are approaching their fall finales. I expect a lot of cliffhangers, and dissapointment from the fans. I, myself, was thoroughly satisfied with the way Prison Break was ended. Mondays couldnt've been better!
P: Wise men speak because they have something to say. Fools because they have to say something.
KD: Wha? Are you saying I talk too much?
P: ...
KD: Alright then, not much of a talker are you, more thinking eh? So what are your thoughts on the two comedies My Name Is Earl and The Office? I'm starting to believe in this karma stuff. And working in a paper company is certainly depressing.
P: That is exactly what I said to Aristotle yesterday: "apply yourself both now and in the next life. Without effort, you cannot be prosperous. Though the land be good, you cannot have an abundant crop without cultivation."
KD: Spot on there, you really are a great philosopher, Plato. And what of LOST? The series kills main characters without a flinch. Surely, with this rate, they can't go on for 15 seasons.
P: Well, No one knows whether death, which people fear to be the greatest evil, may not be the greatest good. Death is not the worst that can happen to men. But, must not all things at the last be swallowed up in death?
KD: Cryptic, but true. By the way, Grey's Anatomy is taking over ER in my list of medical dramas. It's combination of drama, humor, and human values in general is a catalyst to its success, me thinks.
P: You are young, my son, and, as the years go by, time will change and even reverse many of your present opinions. Refrain therefore awhile from setting yourself up as a judge of the highest matters.
KD: I see. (The new John Mayer song, Gravity, starts playing ...).
P: Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.
KD: Wow, I didnt know you're a music lover yourself, Plato.
P: Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue.
KD: Sure... Well, I must be going right now. A complex calculus exam awaits on Tuesday.
P: I have hardly ever known a mathematician who was capable of reasoning.
KD: Mmm.. Thank you.
P: My pleasure.
